Shape the lean ground beef into a single 1cm patty, season both sides with salt and pepper, and dimple the centre.

Cook the patty on a medium-high grill for 4 to 5 minutes per side until charred and juices run clear at 71C internal.

Lay turkey bacon on a medium grill for 2 to 3 minutes and toast the whole wheat bun halves until light grill marks show.

Brush barbecue sauce over the hot patty, then layer lettuce, tomato and red onion on the bottom bun, add patty and bacon.

Close with the top bun, set the burger on a plate and serve while the patty is still warm.
